NBC orders the Romney campaign to stop running an ad starring Tom Brokaw. Why? It's the most exposure Brokaw's had in years.
Brokaw: "I am extremely uncomfortable with the extended use of my personal
image in this political ad. I do not want my role as a journalist
compromised for political gain by any campaign."
Tough. Mitt says Sunday it stays on the air. See how Tom spun Letterman when it was revealed the "legendary" NBC newsman made Obama's 2008 VP list.
Huff Post NYT
Miami Herald blog: "NBC is in high-dudgeon about the use of its material. But it'll keep
airing ads like this because money talks louder than self-important
puffery about TV journalistic standards." (HT Politico)

Ever notice that almost all of Tom's pre-network career was west of the Mississippi?
ReplyDeleteAll the call letters there start with K, not W.
Still, you have to admire a man willing to go all those years agonizing through names like Lahood, Landrieu, Lantos, Lautenberg, Leahy, Lee, Levin, Lewis, Lieberman, Lincoln, Lott, Lowey, Lucas, Lugar, Latvia, and Lithuania.
Not to mention loony like you and me!

Luckily we little like his liklihood of learning to love lilting L sounds.
ReplyDeleteIf Gingrich were to be the nominee you think this same footage would show up in an Obama spot with a disclaimer from Brokaw stating that he approved the message.
ReplyDeleteGood point, John. One that I didn't not entertain.
