| Pearls before prime. |
I found myself pining for Kelly Woman -- Megyn Kelly.
Kelly Evans is about as credible as Mitt Romney's Bigfoot -- and as clumsy. Perhaps she's auditioning to become Erin Burnett's understudy at CNN. Like Burnett, the clearly inexperienced Evans is light years from being ready for prime time. Like the former CNBC man magnet, Evans stars in young males' wet dreams.
Who decided to pluck this political virgin for a plum gig moderating a presidential debate with veteran reporters who have earned their berths? Fox? WSJ suits?
The wrong Kelly got the gig.

Fox missed an opportunity to showcase a smooth communicator possessing both gravitas and journalistic chops rather than a novice with the good fortune to make a seamless transition from college to the Wall Street Journal -- in 2007.
Update: TV by the Numbers: Fox's MLK holiday debate drew "5.5 million viewers with 1.6 million in the 25-54 demographic – even
with the holiday, FNC’s debate beat the last debate held by NBC’s Meet
The Press in both total viewers and in the demo. It also beat CBS’s last
debate in the 25-54 demo. FNC continues to hold the record as having the top debate ratings in
cable news.FNC’s debate (9-11PM) more than tripled the
competition combined on Monday night (747,000 for MSNBC and 518,000 for
CNN from 9-11pm)."
Fox's ratings probably would've been higher without the WSJ chick.

But I'm sure she means well.
ReplyDeleteBesides, remember what happened when young, pretty Sally Quinn crossed and uncrossed her legs while explaining to Ben Bradlee that she had no experience whatsoever to qualify her for a job at the Washington Post.
According to Sally, he replied, "Nobody's perfect".
The answer is because she's young and female. It happens all the time on teevee. Young men who are smart are never seen on-air whereas young women, even if stupid, as long as they're attractive, they can get the gig.
ReplyDeleteMy guess in this case is that Kim Strassel of the WSJ, who is qualified, didn't want to do the debate for some reason.
Yeah, and recall Sally's disastrous tenure as a deer in the headlights anchoring the CBS morning news. Early 1970s.

I've seen airhead guys on Fox as well as other cable news networks and the Big Three.
ReplyDeleteI just have a hard time understanding the rationale for awarding the coveted moderator role to this young, inexperienced person. Man or woman.

I see your point Jaybird but when I look at the picture above I see her at the table with three other men, which tells me guys aren't hurting for opportunities. I'm with Marty, guy or gal, being cute is not a qualification for the job. There are plenty of men and women with depth and experience who are better suited for the moderator position. Frankly, I don't think news execs do these young people any favors by throwing them in the deep end only for them to sink from their own ineptitude.
ReplyDeleteI recall that, and an interview I did with her at WTOP Radio in Washington. Followed by a nasty call from her boss at that morning show, Don Hewitt, who didn't like what Sally had to say about his....interest....in her.
ReplyDeleteI was working at a CBS affiliate in Detroit at the time. 1973. WJBK TV now Fox. We'd watch her on the monitors in the newsroom laughing our asses off.
ReplyDeleteBen Bradlee probably was taken with her fetching overbite . . .
I still cannot believe Evans got the debate moderating gig. It's beyond me.
