"Maladroit. It wasn't very well done." Terence Smith, PBS NewsHour ex-media reporter, on CNN John King's #1 debate question to Newt Gingrich.Howard Kurtz, host of CNN's media moveable feast, Reliable Sources: "It's a misstep . . . Didn't it give the impression, fairly or unfairly, that CNN thought this was the most important thing to be discussed?"
Jennifer Rubin Wash Post: "The question was dopey. If he hadn't thought through it, then shame on him. It was a setup."
Howard Kurtz: "We have buried this guy twice, once last summer, again after Iowa. Why does the press keep underestimating Newt Gingrich?"
New Yorker's Ryan Lizza: "We never learn."
Terence Smith: "Ryan's really right. We don't ever learn. Predictions are a dangerous business, and they're usually wrong."
Kurtz on Gingrich nailing the media Thursday and hitting nearly all the spin shows Sunday: "He obviously uses the media to his advantage while ripping what we do."
Kurtz questions a spinning Brian Ross on ABC News running the recycled recollections of Newt's second wife, Marianne: "On some level, wasn't ABC used by Marianne Gingrich to take revenge against her ex-husband, just at the time that he was surging in the polls?"

| Kurtz: "Was it fair?" |
Howard Kurtz: "To air this story a day and a half before the South Carolina primary feels like a late hit. Were you uncomfortable with the timing?"
Brian Ross: "Not at all. We had done a story on Wednesday night about Mitt Romney and his accounts and funds that are in the Cayman Islands offshore, and we have the story on Mr. Gingrich and his ex-wife for Thursday. We wanted to run them in tandem, and we felt that as long as it wasn't within 24 hours, that was good for us."
Howard Kurtz: "Twenty-four hours would have been too close, but 36 or 48 hours is OK?"
Brian Ross: "We're not out to get anybody. We're out to cover the news and to frame what's going on in this campaign. You know, our viewers and the voters in this country have a right to know all they can about the candidates, and in this case, questions of the moral character, of Newt Gingrich, was one of the campaign issues."
Ross: "We're proud of what we do."

Kurtz, Rubin, Lizza, Smith "Does Gingrich Confuse the Media?"
Brian Ross video

The ONLY thing wrong with John King's question was using it to lead off. And the ABC stories were both fair game. Although it might have been nice to see how other candidates have handled, say, their tax returns: Newt one year only, Rick nothing yet, Ron Paul--hell no never.
ReplyDeleteHow come those aren't stories, in the same context?
And Newt is a media whiner, who seems to think that unless the media are cheerleading republicans, they're out to get republicans. Newt may be a very adroit whiner, but he's a whiner nonetheless.
What's remarkable in this election is the extent to which evangelicals are worried about money only. Newt's errant pecker and Ron Paul's willingness to sell out the country seem to have escaped them. Just what we need--more single issue cretins.
I registered Republican in 1971, this is the weakest Republican Presidential field since i started voting. I can't see Newt winning a general election and Romney should be running as a Democrat against Obama in THEIR primaries. Paul is a fruitcake and Santorum couldn't deliver PA when he needed it. All this in a year when Obama should be easy pickings. Go figure, it's too damn depressing
ReplyDeleteI really thought the Repubs could put up a German Shepherd and win. Not any more.
ReplyDeleteWell, Jim, what's the end result?
ReplyDeleteNewt is leading by 8 and 9 points in 2 new Florida polls, and must now be considered the favorite.
ReplyDeleteI think he CAN beat Obama, but Romney would be more likely to.
Notice the differing analysis of Monday night's debate. NBC's Chuck Todd, Andrea Mitchell, David Gregory seemed to think Newt "won." The Repub establishment's angst is escalating.
ReplyDeleteAndrea, Chuck, David pimping Newt rather than the more electable Romney?
Put yourself in Obama's shoes. Who would you rather run against? Has to be Newt. It would create a sharp contrast as opposed to Romney or as McCain in 08. and Newt's baggage, oh the baggage
ReplyDeleteBut Obama's entire 2012 campaign is tooled for Romney. What's the reset for Newt?
ReplyDeleteI don't think they change the tooling. I just think they would rather run against Newt who they would perceive as an easier target. Romney will prevail because Newt will lose CA, PA, NY, OH, IL and a whole host of northern states. I'll be voting for Romney despite my distrust of him because Romney might be able to beat Obama, Newt can't. I'll take my chances with Romney
ReplyDeleteAfter last night's SOTU, the Repubs better go for the guy who can beat Hitler Youth Obama...
