Regal Rita Refutes Capitol Steps Romp

Rita Jenrette, now living the sexagenarian good life as an Italian princess, now denies she and her congressman husband had sex on the Capitol steps more than 30 years ago.  A founding member of the highly successful comedy troupe that snatched its name from the infamous Capitol breach, The Capitol Steps, tells the Wash Post Reliable Source gossipista Roxanne Roberts: “Maybe she had sex somewhere else we could incorporate into our name. The Reflecting Pool?”

As for Rita's revising and extending her remarks, ex-hubby John Jenrette: “That’s not the way I remembered it."

The New Yorker:  "That period of her life still haunts her."

  1. I actually got to know the Jenrettes, and the night ABSCAM broke, Rita called me, saying "Reporters are all around our house!  What do I do?"  I said, "Don't invite them in."  Later, when she did her big Playboy spread (bad choice of words, that), there was a news conference at the Chicago Playboy Club.  I was working in Chicago then, and the media coverage was HUGE.  One tv station sent 2 crews and reporters--one to cover Rita, the other to cover the media.  Rita sat in the back, regal in her aloofness til the news conference began.  Except, she called out, "Jim", and invited me over!  So I sat with her awhile, while every other reporter in town wondered the nature of my relationship with Rita Jenrette!

  2. My guess is that she felt comfortable around you rather than the usual media vultures.

  3. I got to know her by doing a feature on a song she recorded.  I think she felt comfortable.  She was always a very bright and ambitious woman, although I gather the Capitol Hill crowd didn't recognize that.
