The Garner quote was a definite cheap shot.

I know whereof I speak, Jim. The Post Style Section where the gossip column has always appeared in different incarnations over the years did it to me in 1985. I cannot recall the issue I had but I think I complained about the story and/or photo placement of another item that, because of its proximity, made me look bad.

ReplyDeleteYeah, NYT Malice Rule Times v Sullvan 1964. Supreme Court overturned ruling in public figure's libel case (he won). Supreme Court ruled public figures have to prove actual malice: reckless disregard for the truth et al. I was a serious student of comm law undergrad and grad.
