Jon Stewart's and Stephen Colbert's clever 'Rally To Restore Sanity/Fear' kicks off at Saturday noon Eastern in Washington. The Rally/Fear website is energizing the base with these photos, among others.Wash Post: Two months after Glenn Beck staged a religiously themed "Restoring Honor" rally on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech with Sarah Palin on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Stewart and Colbert will hold their rally at the opposite end of the Mall. It will also offer the opposite point of view. The "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" is billed as a correction to what Stewart, Colbert and their legion fans consider the extremism, vacuousness and dishonesty that has infected the American political system, especially the self-righteousness and conservative fear-mongering they see in Beck and his employer, Fox News. It will include musical interludes by reliable openers such as the Roots and professional rally balladeer Sheryl Crow. It will be emphatically covered by the rating-points and Web-traffic-hungry mainstream media -- including The Washington Post -- that it vigorously mocks. For his part, Beck, a professed fan of Stewart, has passive-aggressively wished the rally "great success."
A Daily Beast poll shows that 67% of those responding believe Stewart's rally will have zero effect on the midterm elections.
CBS News pimped SANITY/FEAR Saturday as a rally for "moderates":

This will end badly for Stewart. One of those things that "sounded good" on the drawing board but really won't pan out. If for no other reason there will be really nasty signs, really nasty rhetoric, lots of foul language, and one enormous mess (despite Stewarts pleas to pick up afterwards)...
ReplyDeleteThe best comparison I can think of is, it's like taking a bunch of teenagers on a field trip. It's inevitable somebody will make a scene worth remembering.
ReplyDeleteNo thanks Jon, I get all my comedy from MSNBC.
ReplyDelete"...warm smell of colitas rising up through the air..."
ReplyDeleteWell Colbert did his show from Iraq for a week, I don't think O'Riley will ever do that.
ReplyDeleteThe premise is that this is comedy, by those whose job is comedy.
ReplyDeleteDemocracy and freedom should not be debased.
What is there to say about us when our elected leaders pander to this level.
Comedy is a tool to mirror our society and to cast light on our shortcomings,
it is not a tool to demean our beliefs.
What's your point?
ReplyDeleteThe real comedy is to watch the spin on the networks - obviously it has already started with CBS.
ReplyDeleteYa think he sent Jesse in first to check for pinheads.
ReplyDeleteI'm announcing the Volley to Restore Brevity. It'll feature fast talker John Mochita and Serena Williams.
ReplyDeleteI am now totally a fan of John Legend & Roots (I'd never heard of ROOTS). My God! The rendition of the anti-war song 'He Done Shot Me In The Shoulder' sent major tingles up and down both my legs! Amazing!

ReplyDeleteI mean WAKE UP EVERYBODY first recorded by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in 1973.
ReplyDeleteI still like Harold's version, being from that era.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnjV8IKe66g
ReplyDeleteTeddy Pendergrass on lead.
ReplyDelete1975.
ReplyDeleteToo cool! I'll be there. Can I read the DC phone book on stage?
ReplyDeleteIt's brevity - just read the conservatives.
ReplyDeleteOMG, my grandson went to this 'rally'. He just sent a picture.
ReplyDeleteWhere did we go wrong?
Tony still looking pretty good, sounds pretty good too. All in all not a bad rally. crowd looks like the tea party's kids sowed up.
ReplyDeleteI watched most of it. Enjoyed the music, awards, and most of the shtick. Grade A!

try not to blame yourself, he'll grow up someday.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree Marty, love that song from '75, oh the memories we have from back then, my son 3 and oldest 5, would love to go back in time, good years. Couldn't sleep now I am sitting here reading the rest of Chickaboomer and listening to a couple of old songs from that time. That rally still had some nutcases there, saw some of it.
