Mark Booking It

Clear Channel CEO Mark Mays - son of founder Lowry Mays - is stepping down.  Mays will retain his gig as chairman of the board. Mays's brother Randall bailed last year. Mays will stay on as president and CEO until a replacement comes on board later this year.

Read the press releaseAfter 21 wonderful years of building the industry leader that is Clear Channel, I have made a personal decision to step away from the chief executive role. Clear Channel is well-positioned to continue leading in the marketplace, and given the positive trends I am seeing, I am very optimistic about the future of the company,” said Mays. “As I’ve discussed with our Board, this is an opportune time for a new CEO to work with the management team in leading our terrific company forward, and I look forward to executing a seamless transition.”

From one humble radio station in San Antonion in 1972, Lowry Mays built the biggest radio conglomerate in the world - good or bad.

  1. Clear channel certainly set the standard--or lack thereof--for consolidation, right down to the ignominious crash. Thanks to CC, a lot of towns lost a lot of community news and service.
