Brian Williams: Gold Lamé

I'm not getting MarketWatch's Jon Friedman. He heads his latest column: 'Brian Williams: a Cronkite for the 21st century ... He is now the gold-standard for anchors.'

But then ends it with: 'It's likely that Williams will never replace Cronkite in historians' hearts and minds. The unofficial designation of Most Trusted may be out of his reach. So, Williams will have to settle for the title of Most Reliable.'

A Huffington Post readers' poll indicates 64% agree with Friedman.

I'm not investing in Friedman's gold line. In Walter's day, the broadcast networks' nightly news was it.

Now the airwaves are diluted with MSNBC's cacophonous crazy Keith Olbermann, CNN's dumb-as-a-brick Rick Sanchez, Fox's strident Sean Hannity, HLN's jester Joy Behar.  CNN's considering hiring ex-NY governor and sexual deviant Eliot Spitzer (Spitzer filled in for MSNBC's Dylan Ratigan May 28-June 2).

Yeah, Williams looks good compared with the above.  But to compare him to Walter Cronkite?  Walter was a Real Journalist who came from print.  It's like comparing Mother Teresa to 'Deep Throat's Linda Lovelace.

  1. I would venture that it is more like comparing Shannon "softcore" Tweed to Linda "Deep Throat" Lovelace, but then, I don't hold Walter in as high esteem as you, Marty.

  2. So we have our new gatekeeper-free world.
    You know what?
We're going to miss the gatekeepers.

  3. williams is no cronkite for sure, your right that was all we had and I did not pay that much attention then but he seemed pretty good during some major news, but if I remember correctly the last few years of his life he showed that far left side of him in some statements he had made which surprised me, he hung out with the clintons I believe, williams shows it all the time, but then I never watch him anymore maybe hes better.

  4. Yeah, I grew up in a Huntley-Brinkley home. Don't know their politics -- and that's the way I believe it should be with good journalists. When I grew old enough make such a judgment, I figured out Cronkite was a lefty egotist windbag.
