Andrew Koppel R.I.P.

'Our son, Andrew, was a brilliant, caring man, whose loss we will mourn for the rest of our lives.'  Ted Koppel family statement on the alcohol and drug death of 40-year-old son Andrew.

NYP photos.

Friends are shocked.  Shocked that Andrew would be drinking and drugging with a stranger in Hell's Kitchen.  Andrew never woke up from "sleeping it off" in a crummy apartment.

I'm not.  As a recovering alcoholic (more than 14 years sober) I understand addiction.  What's sad is that people are still woefully misinformed about drug and alcohol addicts, and the anatomy of addiction...

  1. It IS remarkable, Marty. Here we have one of the greatest epidemics in history, and yet it's hard to tell if the public is more ignorant or apathetic.

  2. I know Marty, I know what your talking about so much, I lived it with my brother as I said before, it was the worst and saddest thing to go thru with him as we are only one year apart and so close, he would try and try but losing his family and home finally made him wake up, and he did it cold turkey with the huge help of AA, two meetings a week, but it was tough. I admire ANYONE who has been thru this, it is a reflection of their strong character and strength that they had to have had and then to stay sober, that in itself takes the greatest strength and alot of prayers and begging God to be with you, he's fine now and close to his family and just lives that one day at a time. like I tell him all the time, You will be just fine. say that to you to Marty. I am so sad for this man, and Ted Koppel, its tragic.
