Idiot-Proofing MSNBC

Washington Post's Pulitzer Prize-winning TV critic Tom Shales (right in an appearance on MSNBC) is not amused by MSNBC's Keith Olbermann's "Worst Person In The World" third-place honor. "While he's attacking people's ethics, he himself is guilty of a huge oversight. He's intentionally misleading viewers. Stewart is more than a colleague. She's his boss' wife. It's a deliberate deception."  NYP Page Six

The backstory:  Tuesday Shales reviewed Alison Stewart's Bill Clinton interview on her new PBS show "Need To Know."  Shales:  "She looked as though she would have been much more comfortable in Clinton's lap."

Alison Stewart was Olbermann's "Countdown" fill-in hostess.  Stewart is married to Bill Wolff (left with Alison), VP MSNBC prime time programming. Wolff is executive producer of "The Rachel Maddow Show" and not Olbermann's boss of bosses.

Stewart wasn't thrilled with Shales's "crude, crass, sexist" remarks that she said certainly wouldn't pass muster in today's workplace.

As for Olbermann, he demanded Shales be "terminated."  Olbermann is obviously unaware that Shales took the Washington Post buyout some time ago and now is a contract employee.

Shales took "Worst Person" third place the same night (Thursday) that Olbermann branded Sarah Palin "an idiot" and annointed her "Worst Person In The Wurrrrld" for criticizing Rachel Maddow and MSNBC.

As far as "crude," "crass," "sexist," NYT columnist Frank Rich points out Sunday that MSNBC was among two cable news networks (the other Fox) "having a field day with double-entendre wisecracks about [Obama Supreme Court nominee Elena] Kagan’s softball prowess."

To wit:  Wednesday May 12th MSNBC "Morning Joe" kicked off every hour with "Is Elena Kagan A Lesbian?" lengthy speculation after the Wall Street Journal ran this 1993 photo of Kagan batting up. Related:  Chickaboomer "A League Of Their Own."

The speculation was that the Wall Street Journal, in running the photo on the front page, was sending a not-so-subliminal message that Kagan is a muff diver.

You tell me why this was MSNBC's "Morning Joe" lead every hour Wednesday.

And has openly gay Rachel Maddow weighed in on the "speculation" by her MSNBC colleagues?  Don't think so.

Who's the "idiot?"  Olbermann.  And judging by comments made Tuesday in L.A. to a cable industry thing by NBC's presumptive new owner, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, I suspect Olbermann's reign of error will end.

  1. I thought that we lived in the day where it was "ok" to be gay.

If it's "ok", then why can't anybody talk about it? Why aren't the Dem's celebrating this?

    Hmmm...

  2. Because it's been put out there by "friends" of Kagan that she's not gay...

  3. The confirmation hearings will be good political drama. The republican (sacrificial lamb) who is chosen to drive the dialog regarding this will be vilified by the liberal media.

  4. If you're going to blame "the liberal media" for everything, can you help me out (I'm not that smart you see) and explain WHO is part of "the liberal media" or does this change from story to story? Is it always the same members that make up "the liberal media?"

    Just askin'.....

  5. Pat, the liberal media consists of most broadcast and cable tv and most metropolitan newspapers. There are very few exceptions. And no, it doesn't seem to change from story to story.

Talk radio is dominated by the Right, which is why the liberals want to enact their "Fairness Doctrine" to alleviate the Rights freedom of speech.

  6. Wasn't Alison Steward an anchor on MSNBC? Last week she was a guest on Joy Behar's HLN show. Joy asked her panel of guests which Republican they admired. Alison made a face and couldn't name any.

  7. Thank you for the clarity. I wasn't aware The Wall Street Journal and the Chicago tribune were part of The Liberal media. Might we be using some "glittering generalities" rather than naming names?
I also wasn't aware it's bad to have an opposing viewpoint on now and then instead of hearing "ditto" 127 times an hour or have guests that have differing views. I do appreciate the chance to understand how all of this works. It's always good to hear the same sing because sooner or later you will know the words and won't have to think.

  8. Pat, obviously you don't know what the word "most" means. Try a dictionary.

Who said opposing viewpoints were bad? The few conservative media outlets that we have give us those opposing viewpoints you're referring to. Do you have a problem with this?

  9. Did the WSJ make the claim that Ms Kagan was gay? To my knowledge, all WSJ did was to publish the softball batting pic. Some other outfit made the speculation... which I don't understand because most everyone plays softball.

As for idiot-proofing MSNBC, they'd have to moron-proof it to make a difference.

  10. pat if you need names of liberal media how about new york times, which I might add is really obamas newspaper, washington post, latimes, boston globe, houston chronicle, newsweek, time magazine, usweekley(really),vanity fair, nbc, abc, cnn, cbs, msnbc, pbs, and the list goes on and on, and conservatives have most of talk radio, THANK GOD and FOX NEWS is not ALL Republican talking points as libs love to say, it tells the facts of what obama is really doing not all pro-obama as the "liberal media" is doing, it does not change story to story, it always leans liberal except in a rare moment when they just cannot hide the facts and have to tell the true story of what is really going on, you know the facts that cannot be hidden, now I know you said you were not very smart so I hope you know now which are some of the liberal papers and networks, I tried to tell you as many of them as I could think of and as far as "ditto", would love to know who says it 127 times an hour, I listen to most and never hear it but a couple of times big difference, but glad you are listening to them, now you see why they are so successful, they also tell the facts, but I'm sure you know that, pat have a good day.....

  11. Alison was an anchor on MSNBC and later fill-in for Olbermann. She went to NPR to host the now-defunct Bryant Park. She's got a new show on PBC.

She met Wolff who was then, what? EP news. VP news. Something.
