Dick Blumenthal may wish he'd gone to Vietnam. He just got what could be a fatal political wound from the New York Times. The Dem Connecticut attorney general running for Chris Dodd's Senate seat has claimed over and over again that he served in Vietnam.
The NYT finds Blumenthal dodged the draft with five deferments and never was anywhere near Vietnam.
Up until now Blumenthal has enjoyed a comfortable lead over primary and Republican opponents.
So what if Republicans were behind the NYT leak? Blumenthal is going to have a tough time weaseling out of this. He "misspoke?" My ass. Now the spin is the NYT's piece is an "outrageous distortion." What fucking chutzpah!
Winston Churchill famously said: "In war you can only be killed once, but in politics, many times."
Here is Blumenthal shooting himself in the foot with what he now calls "a few misplaced words."

The Vietnam War continues to bring down politicians
ReplyDeleteHe's toast, and deservedly so.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, if he wants someone to spit on him and call him a criminal, I'll gladly oblige.
How nice, Jim! You remember how the returning Vietnam vets were treated by their own callous countrymen.
ReplyDeletethe bastard lied when he said he served in vietnam and then he lied again when he said he misspoke. he is lower than snakeshit
ReplyDeletewhat they did to Bush compared to this guy, and Bush did not lie about going to viet-nam, and it was nyts with the story, heard today why would they do this, speculation was that get it out early, give him time to let it die and he will survive, probably true.
ReplyDeleteAfter my emotional response above, I've rethought this, and although he is a lying shit, I think Sandra's right: In an essentially very blue state, he'll survive, with a reduced margin.
ReplyDeleteSandar and jimbo are both correct. In the liberal haven of Conneticut, they electorate will likely award him a medal for not serving in Vietnam and then lying about it. Here! here!
