Obama Sun Block

"Few events -- outside of presidential debates and the parties' national conventions -- draw this sort of wall-to-wall coverage from the cable networks and the rest of the media horde. The question is whether a six-hour policy discussion on health care conducted in the middle of the day can hold the attention of a large number of people for any real amount of time."  Wash Post's "The Fix" Chris Cillizza on Obama's transparently orchestrated health care summit"blotting out the political sun."

Mike Allen POLITICO: Robert Gibbs did all the morning shows (on 'GMA': 'Put aside this notion of kabuki theater. Put aside this notion of six-hour photo opps. And instead come and let's discuss, in EARNEST, good ideas on health care.') HHS Secretary Sebelius will be on CNBC and Bloomberg TV, plus MSNBC's 'Chuck and Savannah' at 9:10 a.m. and CNN at 9:20 a.m. Linda Douglass will be on cable during the lunch break. David Axelrod will do post-game (CNN's 'Situation Room,' 'PBS News Hour,' Fox's Major Garrett, etc.)

Cable marathon -- POLITICO's Michael Calderone: 'CNN and Fox [are] covering the entire six hours live. Wolf Blitzer leads CNN's coverage from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., joined by Candy Crowley, John King, and others ... Anchor Ali Velshi will be fact-checking during the coverage, ... with Dr. Sanjay Gupta offering medical analysis. Fox News anchor Bret Baier leads the network's coverage, kicks things off for the network at 9:50 a.m., followed by Megyn Kelly from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and 'Studio B' host Shepard Smith closing it out. Correspondents Carl Cameron, Major Garrett and Jim Angle will all be reporting from Washington. Greg Sargent reports that MSNBC will cover live the first four hours before cutting to the Olympics at 2 p.m. At 9 p.m., Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews will host a two-hour special on the summit.' P.O.T.U.S. on SIRIUS XM will provide live coverage beginning at 9:30 am ET.

An aside:  MSNBC's "The Daily Rundown" Chuck Todd - stop calling Obama's health care summit "Kabuki theatre."

  1. so far we have heard NOTHING NEW just another recap of his current great care, another recount of his girls childhood maladies, another recount of his mother final days with cancer and how the insurance companies tried to screw her over. but best ANOTHER recount of the ten letters he goes home with every night from the 40 THOUSAND HE RECEIVES EVERY DAY and how 4 to 6 of them always bring up health care. my question who is picking the letters obama goes to bed with every night? three guesses.

  5. This is absolutely the most certain way to make sure that nothing is accomplished. We're in an election year, in a hardened partisan atmosphere, and you expect politicians to make compromises under the eyes of their constituents? Not a prayer.
In this instance, transparency is way overrated. With closed doors there's a chance they could get something done. This way, both sides just get talking points leading up to November.
