NPR does a reader poll on Fox News commentator Brit Hume's Tiger Woods come to Jesus plea and finds 51% believe Brit committed no on-air sin.
Brit appeared on Bill O'Reilly's show Monday to revise and extend the remarks he made on "Fox News Sunday" suggesting Buddhist Tiger would find redemption and forgiveness in Christianity that Buddhism lacks.

shrewd move by Brit. he fell off the radar when he retired from full-time work. now he's famous. he's the talk of the town. maybe move to ND or CT and win the senate seat. should be easy for a republican this year. or take the speaking fees which surely must have tripled now.
ReplyDeleteThe more Brit talks, the farther his foot goes into his mouth. He should have just issued an apology and let this thing die down.
ReplyDeleteIt's his opinion, right? We all have opinions, don't we? Just leave it at that. An opinion. Nothing more, nothing less.
ReplyDeleteVery few religions offer the personal redemption christianity does. I'm no buddhist, but it could be that Brit was just speaking fact. I think a previous poster here disputed that, saying he was a christian with buddhist leanings. Whatever--if it works for you, fine, but he's still practicing a made-up religion.
ReplyDeleteBesides, most of this discussion has acted as though this redemptive trait is some sort of automatic positive. I'm not so sure about that. How many christians fuck around all week, say 3 hail marys, and then fuck around the next week for their entire lives? Most of those folks need a 12 step program, like Rationalizations Anonymous.
ReplyDelete@jimbotalk - the Kennedys perhaps? Didn't Teddy still receive communion after everything he did, or not?
ReplyDeleteI'm not into organized religion for a variety of reasons that would take too long to outline.
ReplyDeleteBrit said it. But I've heard a lot worse on other cable news channels from blowhard talking heads...
@Marty - I agree and I can't figure out why it's being made a big deal of.
ReplyDeleteJim,
ReplyDeleteWould like some ice with all that religious haterade? Man, I do tire of all the "every religious person is a hidden hypocrite" malarchy. They've obviously never met my wife's side of the family where many of them live an exemplary Christian lifestyle. I'm not one of them but they are good folks to be around. But getting back to THE POINT, Brit wasn't offensive in mine eye. It just seems that a lot of lefty irreligious hotheads seem to take umbrage with what he had to say that's all. They are the 1st to attack Christianity every day and twice on Sunday but any other religion is seemingly off-limits. Issues much? My money is on yes.
Hume isn't new to television news and knew exactly the reaction his words would solicit. So far he hasn't backed down from those words one teensy bit. Good for him.
ReplyDeleteJustthemiller might consider remedial reading, as nowhere did I say or even hint that "every religious person is a hidden hypocrite". But you and I both know that many are, and many use this redemption as an excuse for changing nothing whatsoever. For the record, I'm not upset by what Brit said, and I'm glad there are moral people like your wife's family. I know many such people myself. None of which invalidates a single word I wrote, as opposed to what you imagined.
ReplyDeleteHe was just doing what evangelicals are supposed to do ... spread the Word.
ReplyDeleteI don't like proselytizing on air remember Tammy Faye and Jim Baker?
ReplyDeleteIf your faith is strong, and you believe in a God that is "omnipotent" Think about that concept - Omnipotent, he doesn't need Hume going on TV recruiting for him. God can reach out, and touch Tiger Woods whenever and in whatever manner he deems. The idea that first People preach that God is all powerful, and in the next breath tell me, that they have to spread God's word to HELP him, has never made any sense to me. If God is all Powerful he doesn't need MORTALS help.
If people believe that God was working through Brit Hume, you know in one of his mysterious ways, please place your hands on your monitor, and send your contributions too: Let's Help God Redeem Tiger Woods Dot Com. LOL!
KeyBoard Jock: Your comment reminds me of this joke: So there's this huge flood one day, and an entire town looks like it's going to be swallowed up by the waters. And the Police and Rescue Agencies are running all over the place trying to get people to safety.
ReplyDeleteSo they send the rescue boat over to this house where a guy's sitting on the roof with the water lapping around his ankles and they say "Come on, quickly, there isn't much time"
To which he says "Nah, it's ok, God will Provide"
So about an hour later they're zooming past in the boat again and they notice the guy's still there, only the water's up to his waist, almost at the top of the roof.. "Quick" they say, get in the boat, it's going to get worst before it gets better.
"Nah, don't worry - God will Provide"
An hour after that a rescue helicopter flies over the area and notices the guy, who must be standing on the peak of the roof now, with only his head and shoulders out of the water. "GRAB THE ROPE!" they cry "IT'S YOUR ONLY HOPE!"
"Don't worry" he replies calmly "God will provide."
So he gets drowned of course. And he goes to heaven, and is a little ticked off with god for drowing him like that, and expresses his concern saying "I had FAITH, I BELIEVED in you - and still you didn't help me"
"HELP YOU?!" God replies "What MORE did you want - I sent you two boats and a helicopter!"
You know, "God works in mysterious ways." And sometimes maybe uses Brit Hume, for better or worse.
However, for my comment, I am more amused by the reaction of John Stewart who was just apoplectic over Hume's remarks. I couldn't figure out what he was so upset about. Then I saw the clip. That's ALL it took to get Stewart's reaction? Really? Wow.
Hume said something "Cheesy" on a cable news commentary program. He has made himself the "Story" why because Tiger Woods is in the news cycle. That's called manipulation.
ReplyDeleteCommentary or Proselytizing - Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace. Fox News Network wants to get into TV evangelism?
I already noted someone was going to bring up God's mysterious ways...who thinks God is this cheesy? God's thought cloud - I know I will use Brit Hume, on a Sunday cable news talk show to get my message to Tiger Woods....because why? Tiger didn't get the point at the end of his wife swinging a golf club or the SUV accident backing out of his driveway? No this takes Super Hume...give me a break.
This did one thing it got Brit Hume buzz, and it is cheesy, Brit Hume knows how the Media works.
Again Fox News Networks is going for the Evangelical Brand Network? What about all the rest of the folks who watch? Hume's statement turned me off, it wasn't the appropriate venue.
As far as Tiger Woods religion. I would say the negative Karma he has built up is working. But who knows if Tiger Wooods is a devout a Buddhist and even notices?
