Bury "Shovel-Ready"

My late friend, Bill Rabe, at Lake Superior State College in Michigan's U.P. started a trend 35 years ago that survives to this day.  Words and phrases that should be banished.  Here's 2010's list.

Let me add "notion", "at the end of the day", "we have to leave it there."

  1. I would like to add "socialize" to the list. As in "we need to socialize Marty on the new approaches to gun control." (Said with tongue frimly in cheek)

It is almost as bad as the misused term "granularity" and is pretty rampant in the Federal government right now.

  2. i would like to literally add my 2 cents to this conversation. in general grammar has always been abused. frankly, i like to think outside of the box regarding this absolutely perfect storm for the English language as we know it. clearly something must be done. however, at the end of the day i could care less. oh, and have a nice day!

  3. I'm nine years (almost) late but can we say September 11 instead of "Nine-Eleven"? Are we in that much of a hurry? It still sounds like some super fast food place. By the way, Happy "Twelve Thirty One."

  4. Ah, Bill Rabe (pronounced like one rabies). EVERY year I called him for the latest list. He is missed.
