It was 15 years ex post facto. NBC's Andrea Mitchell - now 64 - dons a flannel shirt and relives Woodstock in a 1984 segment on NBC's "Summer Sunday" co-anchored by then WH correspondent Mitchell, and the eccentric Texan Linda Ellerbee:
Ellerbee co-anchored "NBC Overnight" with the weirdly brilliant Lloyd Dobyns - the best newscast ever with Lloyd's signature "And so it goes..." stolen from weirdly brilliant novelist Kurt Vonnegut.
Overnight debuted at 1:30a in July 1982. I loved it.
In the 1970s Dobyns got in an argument when Jane Pauley was auditioning for the "Today" show. I think it was 1975. The then-WMAQ NBC Chicago anchoress insisted the cat's name was "Puff" in the "Dick and Jane" elementary school readers.
Lloyd disagreed. Jane was right. Lloyd wasn't used to losing to what he perceived as an airhead broad.
And so, where are they now? Jane Pauley, that is. Embroidering GT monograms on towels can't take up all her day.
ReplyDeletePauley: Who knows? She had another run at TV that petered out.
ReplyDeleteMaybe she's monitoring her three children's Facebooks...
Knowing Andrea, I can safely tell you that she was not wearing a flannel shirt in our show on the NBC News show about "Woodstock." That was a silk shirt. I'm pretty sure Andrea has never owned, much less worn, a flannel shirt. She has much better taste. I, however, own and wear 5 old and faded plaid flannel shirts - although usually not at the same time.
ReplyDeleteAs I never bothered to save tapes from any of the NBC News shows I anchored, may I say thanks for the (brief) memory.
Oh, what a time it was.
Regards,
Linda Ellerbee
Proof of why one must always re-read one's posts. Here is what I meant to say, minus the error in syntax:
