Peter Panned: Cable News Neverland

Tick tock. 24 Hours To Off The Wall. Are we there yet?

The Wrap's Lucas Shaw: Everyone from Nancy Grace to Geraldo to Larry King to Keith Olbermann has jumped into a wall-to-wall, flood-the-zone media strategy since the international pop star died on Thursday, June 25.

But for news networks CNN and MSNBC, it has been a temporary help that hasn't altered the basic landscape, where Fox News still reigns supreme.

All three of the main players -- Fox News Channel, CNN and MSNBC -- bested by far their viewership average with their first day of Jackson coverage less than two weeks ago, but only Fox has managed to retain most of those viewers.

This reflects a growing trend, as Fox has become not only the top-rated cable news network, but also the third most-watched channel in all of cable.

Wake me when the Pope offers a toast of Jesus Juice, as 5000 cub scouts all lower their flies to half mast.

FOX isn't joining in, by the way. Boy, Jim, aren't you the cynic?

well at least ONE network is aware there is other things going on.

I am not watching mostly because of the over top Jackson coverage. I heard he died, and now they are going to bury him....that didn't take me 20 seconds to type.

So I should thank all the news outlets for a vacation from the news channels ;)

All this talk about not caring-not watching-not thinking about who will show up or what tune Stevie Wonder will do sounds---to this humble observer of cable--a bit high brow.

Michael Jackson is a car wreck. Enjoy the view as it passes by.

I think the Jackson car wreck cortege has a long cable TV shelf life, Pat...

I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it amy more - Jacko is DEAD DEAD DEAD. You want to commit suicide over it, to quote Dennis Miller, do us all a favor and "thin the herd".Jacko and Elvis have left the building (give it another few weeks before we start seeing MJ sightings reported).

I'm with Jimbo - let's just have a party (adults only, no Cub Scout fondling) and forget the endless chatter and funeral plans.

MJ sightings at that proverbial grocery store in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I'm with NY Rep. Peter King:

King tells WCBS NY: http://wcbstv.com/politics/peter.king.youtube.2.1074112.htmlI just think we're too politically correct. No one wants to stand up and say, 'We don't need Michael Jackson!' He died, he had some talent, but fine, there are people dying every day. There are men and women dying everyday in Afghanistan, let's give them the credit they deserve.

"The bottom line is, would you let your child or grandchild be alone in a room with Michael Jackson?

King also says "there was nothing good about this guy" even though Jackson "may have been a good singer" and "did some dancing."

On Monday he carried the rant further:

"Yes, he did violate young boys. He did put them in terribly inappropriate positions. And that's a terrible signal to be sending out to society -- that we're somehow condoning that behavior. And you are condoning it when you give him the type of --- when we give him the type of regal coverage! And millions of people fighting to get to this mega-memorial! I mean, this is --- this is wrong!"

Nice quote, Marty - I'll drink to that.

I do not intend to watch any of the festivities today. I may tune into The Weather Channel and pray for bad weather some place. My only hope is that none of the Jacksons has a wardrobe malfunction during the event.

QUESTION: WILL THERE BE A SEPARATE CEREMONY FOR HIS BRAIN WHEN THEY FINISH WITH THE AUTOPSY? That would allow CNN to stretch this out a bit longer.
