When CNN began (and I was an employee for those first 3 years) it really was a NEWS network. It had a prime time newscast, and the ONLY talk show of any note was Sandy Freeman (replaced by Larry King). It's gradually moved away from news, and into talk show, and it might as well make the plunge all the way. I'd hate it, for myself and the country, but there's a national taste for pre-digested opinion.
I was at CNN Wash bureau (briefly) as an international news writer.
Like the pre-digested opinion. Cable news is nothing more than talk radio with video...
CNN the Corpse News Nework. No one covers death better that us. CNN "buries" the real news stories for all the fluff.
Death is easy to do because one already has the video for use as B-roll (do they still call it that?) and an intern can research and type out bullet talking points. Add a banner on the bottom that says "Breaking New" or "This just in" or "Flash News" or "This Isn't News But It's New" and you're good for a half hour block, which of course becomes a seven day block.
