Fox News phenom Glenn Beck gets a "B."Reviewer: I asked Beck whether he'd like eventually to land in prime time. Not really, he says. "Because I'm a recovering alcoholic, I've stopped trying to steer my career and enjoy the moment. I'm thrilled where we are [at 5], and whatever happens happens. I just want to enjoy myself."
Glenn, knock off the recovering alcoholic spin. It's mighty tedious hearing you justify yourself as a flawed Everyman in every interview. I don't use that rationalization for every decision I make or don't make... And yeah, I'm a FOB too.
Me three. Glenn. Enough already.
ReplyDeleteBut doesn't this make you like Glenn all the more? Doesn't it make him the under dog---battling all those rat bastard liberals every day? Doesn't it make you want a glass of Wild Turkey when he appears every day at 5PM?
ReplyDelete.........yeah. Along with a handful of sleeping pills....
ReplyDeleteDear Glenn Beck,
ReplyDeleteAny "Friend of Bill's" should avoid brain surgery procedures performed by "Dr. Bob."
I like Beck, but those constant "recovering alcoholic" reminders are annoying. Most recovering alcoholics I know rarely, if ever, mention that.
ReplyDeleteGrandpa D: You haven't heard me justify my actions because I'm a recovering addict or righteously drone on quoting the 12 Steps. Seems Glenn's still into drama and poor me and ego.
ReplyDeleteMost recovering addicts have other issues that need to be adddressed. There are many other forms of addictions tempting to addicts other than substance. They fall into them not realizing they are engaging in the same addictive behavior.

ReplyDeleteImus Radiothon this week It's hard telling how well it will go this year in this economy.

The recovering alcoholic spin plays on so many levels, none of which I like, but all of which work to some degree, hence its continued use. (1) the sympathy vote: I'm fallible and weak but trying to be a better man; watch me climb out of my hole (2)the train wreck waiting to happen: I have fallen before, and I could fall again at any moment; keep watching me to see if I spin out of control (3) the built-in excuse: It's not my fault that I never reached a prime time slot or failed in a prime time slot or whatever I didn't do because I wasn't supposed to; I'm a former addict so anything I achieve is admirable, and the bar is only as high as my current position.
ReplyDeleteDon't watch him. Won't watch him.
Anon,
ReplyDeleteI'm watching him now. He's not very far away from the little men with the white jacket pulling him off set. He is a psycho......
I watched him yesterday (Tuesday). The whole program. I agree with Anon, above. Glenn was getting really wacky. But it is compelling television.
ReplyDeleteHe's got personality, style. Show is personality-driven.
Re: previous anon: If Glenn were truly sober he wouldn't be wearing his disease on his sleeve. He is exhibiting signs of relapse, in my humble opinion.
One is told in A.A. to question one's motivation before doing or saying anything. Is Glenn doing that?
Very interesting observation....
ReplyDeleteAt least we are not watching him order and eat a hamburger.
