Radio Hall of Famer Jim Bohannon reports on R&R TRS 2009: Radio and Records Talk Radio Seminar in Marina Del Ray, California, is as sparsely populated as the ranks of economic optimists, and for the same reason. But those who are here have gotten a few earfuls. For example, KFI, Los Angeles, Program Director Robin Bertolucci lived up to her straight-talk reputation when she declared that "program directors are chickenshit about trying new things. Not always, but generally." Bertolucci herself is trying a segment of weekend programming where she puts on the air someone who may, or may not, have what it takes to be a talk host. She goes in with no expectations, hoping for a slim batting average. Who knows? 10 losers could be followed by the next Limbaugh.During one session out here, ostensibly about "opportunities and challenges facing the (talk radio) format", the biggest challenge turned out to be panelist Alex Nogales of the National Hispanic Media Coalition. He charged that inflammatory conservative talk hosts have created a dangerous atmosphere which has led to a rise in death threats against latinos. In particular, Nogales singled out Michael Savage as "hateful" and said his bosses should be held accountable for Savage's actions. That wasn't exactly a veiled reference, as Nogales was sitting right next to Savage's top boss, Talk Radio Network President Mark Masters, who admitted that he doesn't always agree with Savage, but that free speech is at stake. Masters then offered to consult Nogales, for free, in establishing a latino talk network. Stay tuned. Bilingually.
Oh, there was a sighting of former Radio and Records publisher, the lovely Erica Farber, who admits she's got a new project brewing, details still under wraps.
There was also a spirited Fairness Doctrine debate moderated by Rita Cosby, with conservatives represented by Republican congressmen Greg Walden of Oregon and Mike Pence of Indiana, plus San Diego talk host Roger Hedgecock and radio programmer Brian Jennings. The left was upheld by talk hosts Stephanie Miller and Thom Hartman, plus syndicator Paul Woodruff. All the liberals swore that they absolutely hate hate hate the fairness doctrine and just want radio stations to clear their shows. Or else.

CNN's Larry King finally got R&R's Lifetime Achievement Award - before he exits the planet...
Jim & I will have more on other winners... I'm sorry I missed it but I only attend when the event is in DC.
